Movie Date with Mom

So I have a movie date with my Mom when The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo comes out later this month. I haven't read the book yet, so I have some reading to do before December 21st. You see, I have this rule. If a movie is based on a book, I MUST read the book before the seeing the movie.

I have only broken this rule once in my adult life. I probably broke it a million times as a child with all the fairy tale movies, but how was I to know then? So as an adult, I have seen The Lord of the Rings trilogy numerous times but I have never read the books. So my personal goal for next year, since I have to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo first, is to read The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I have been told by some to read The Hobbit first and by others that it does not matter. So now I have just three questions for you:

1. Should I read The Hobbit first?

2. Do you have any "rules" about movies based on books, or other "rules" for you life to share?

and

3. What is your personal goal for the next year?

  1. I have not read any of the The Lord of the Rings books, they just don't interest me. I don't have any rules about movies for myself--if I happen to go to one and find out later there is a book, I try to read it to see how close the movie was to the book, though.

Personal goal for next year? to get my house furnished.
